Are these hybrids or another type of Ram? I picked a couple up on a whim because they are beautiful.. rounded body with lots of color.. any one have any? .. or anyone have any other info on them it is appreciated..

Thank you very much ..that is exactly what they are.. they are Angel rams.. that is not what my LF called them ..they said they were ballon rams.. so wow a cross with Angels..I will post a picture too..they are so pretty..

here is a picture of mine..not the greatest picture because they are in temporary tank..along with the Bicher..

Anyone know how this variation occurs?

It's a genetic defect. Not an uncommon one either. It happens in quite a number of fish, some of which are also line-bred for the trait and sold commercially (balloon mollies, florida flag fish, "jellybean" convicts", angels).
It just pops up in a fish and should a breeder have dollar signs for eyes it would strike them to breed it into a strain that eventually breeds true for the defect.

You can see some examples of these kinked and bloated individuals in these links:

wow thanks alot for all this information... do you have any of these? Can i put them in with my angels and clown loaches.. I am not into breeding hybrids or genetic defects.. i really like to stay with the true.. but they are pretty..

No I don't have any. Their rams and behave like rams. Some might experience swim bladder problems, from what I've read, but other than that they'd behave no differently than any other normal ram.

This thread on another site links to the site with the nice looking balloon rams.

The ones I saw were very thin, not like balloons.....
