I have not shown bettas before, but I did breed them. It's not too difficult. Just be ready for lots and lots of little fishies that need to be in separate tanks.
Basically, you want some tall plants (or in my case, I used the betta cup lid) for a place for the male to blow a bubble nest.
Use a sponge filter so there is little to no chance of loosing fry.
Have a fake (or live) plant at one end of the tank for the female to hide in when breeding is over (opposite corner from the nest is preferred).
I put the male in a 10 gallon fry tank (bare bottom) and started up some green water.
Condition the male and female with good foods (mine loved freeze dried blood worms) for a few days.
Put the female in a guppy breeder bin (or secure her betta cup to the inside of the same tank) with the water lines near even.
Eventually she should get stripes running horizontally across her body.
She will jump over into the male's tank and they should soon breed.
Usually this happens at night, or while the room is dark (it's lovely if you can catch it).
Remove her asap (once they get the eggs into the bubble nest), he will start to beat her up after this point.
The male watches over the eggs.
