I am just curious if anyone has successfully bred Senegal Bichirs in an Aquarium before and if so a couple of questions.

1. How old were they?
2. What was needed in the aquarium to trigger the breeding?
3. What environmental changes were needed for breeding to occur?

My oldest group were 3 yrs old at the time really didn't noticed that they spawned until I saw a tiny fry move from the gravel substrate lol. The same group spawned twice about 7 years ago.

Very similar story here. The female was always pretty plump, male always interested and following her around. Never witnessed the spawn but found fry when vacuuming the gravel. They may have spawned again but if so it was not due to specific input on my part.

The pair was about 10" and 2.5 years in my care at the time.

Thanks for the input guys very useful information. My male and female are only about 5-6 inches at the moment. I'd say they have a bit of growing to do before they will be ready to spawn. Seems like spawning just randomly occurs when they are of a certain size and age and after a large water change with cooler water.

Actually Polys probably spawned in other members aquarium and they didn't know it. Now I know the signs 1 gravid females 2 mood swing in the males will chase around females. The eggs are scattered so you have to be quick to remove the eggs also have a magnifying glass on hand lol.

Thanks Polyaddict86 I did see that post very useful information. Just wondered if it was any different at all for senegal's and if anyone had their senegal's breed.
Should be the same, takes time for them to mature and be ready to breed. Ive seen polys that a adult size but not ready to breed so it really depends on the fish.
