Sounds like a fun project, specially if I had the time and money. I guess start with some founding stock like a Trimac, Texas, midas, etc.

Thoughts?

I thought about it, even started breeding. Quickly realized I was better off using existing fish and breeding for the traits I wanted. If you do start this program, don't expect results for a few years, and you will need thousands of gallons of aquariums.

I think most people have thought about it, just not practical or within reach of most people

Go ahead. Make a Silk from scratch.

We would all love to do this.
Like they said, thousands of gallons. Fish farms have over 200 tanks. There's a reason they have so many, these fish don't just roll over and breed. Boy, do I wish it were that simple.

This is what you would have to do to make a flowerhorn from scratch. Make a hybrid then outcross then repeat about seven or eight times between four to six different species. But all while raising every batch of fry looking for what you are breeding for.

convert water storage containers and kiddie wading pools
buy outdoor ponds on CL this time of year when people want them gone and they're cheap
I'm actually looking at a super cheap 725 gallon stock tank right now -I could probably haggle him down to 100 bucks- the real question is space... and will my girlfriend break up with me if I keep succumbing to my fish addiction

I don't think it would ever be a flowerhorn. It would just be a hybrid. Good luck with it if you try...document everything.
