I haven't used my Nikon in awhile and want to get back in to it with the new stock coming in. Don't really want to pay for photoshop right now given I'm just doing this quite casually. After some looking around, I came across GIMP as a supposed great photoshop comparable software piece. If anyone has used it with success, I'd appreciate any input you have on it.

I published a children's book and most of it was done using Gimp. Attached is a link to it on amazon you can see some of the pics

If you are used to photo shop at first it is a little confusing but the learning curve is relatively quick. once you learns where everything is and what every thing is called it is relatively easy. There are some work around's you need to do with the tools that are unique only to photoshop like drop shadow but anyone can over come that with layering.

Incredible work! For an editing newb such as myself, what would you suggest reading/learning first?

Edited my original post with further info.

But I would recommend jumping in and playing with it. when you come accross something you can't do look for a tutorial online there are many many tutorials online. I bought some books but I never once cracked them. I learned everything by playing.

Go on youtube an watch a bunch of tutorials on getting started with gimp. That might be handy also.

I used GIMP for 3 years before finding a cs6 torrent. The tools and effects aren't as refined as photoshop but u can do most of the same things with it. There's a lot of useful plugins online too like BIMP which allows you to batch edit multiple images. Definitely look up a tutorial on youtube to save time figuring out where the basics are
