Has anyone ever used mud as a substrate im keen on a dark substrate but i would still like earth eaters.

I have never seen dark sand or 3m or blasting sand where i live....

I have seen mineralized dirt and stuff used as a substrate in planted tanks, but it is usually covered (minus a few exceptions). My guess is that it could get real nasty real fast.

Well yes mud can be used as a substrate, but only if you are 100% sure it was used in an area isolated from pesticides and fertilizers, and then it is used in planted tanks coved in another substrate. If used in a tank uncovered i'm guessing your tank is going to be increadibly murky all the time, your filters will be covered in it, really slowing them down and it could even gum up the impeller and cause a filter failure.

So short answer, no it wouldn't work in your tank.

I wouldn't do it unless your talking baout a 60" high or greater tank with minimal current. I could see that turning really bad really quick. If your going to try and carpet it with plants I think iwould still go with only an extremely tall tank.
