kept venomous reptiles. such as rattlesnakes. im considering getting one but defanging it first. and is it illegal to own one, defanged or not?

Well for starters, why do you want a Rattlesnake in the first place? De-fanging a snake does not make it harmless. Another set of fangs will grow in to replace the ones removed. Not to mention it's a pretty cruel practice. It'd be like catching an eagle, clipping it's wings and throwing it in a chicken coop. I'd find out first if you can even have HOTs in your area.

I agree very much with what he said.

If you ask me defanging a snake is a very barbaric and cruel thing to do:irked:
Have you any herp experience at all?

I agree that defanging is very cruel and they will grow back and the snake will be hot again. I think what you are thinking about is the removal of the venom gland. This is a very complex surgery. often times the snake will come out of th surgery with a distorted head shape since the venom glands do take up alot of the head area and infection occurs alot too. Then also by dong this you are removing the way that snake catches it prey. I disagree in defanging or removing the venom gland in all cases if you want a hot herp then take it as it is and give it the most natural life possible.

i dont know why people insist on keeping animals that could easily kill them. there are plenty of cool reptiles that wont leave you dead with a single bite.

If you can't handle a venomous snake without disarming it, you shouldn't get one.

rattlers arent a good idea.

trust me.

but if you do want one... do not de-fang it. why would you do that? so you can pick it up?

and just wait till your sleeping at 2am and the thing starts rattling... and rattling, and rattling and keeps going for like an hour!

have fun.

If you have been in the hobby successfully for a long time and kept healthy and safely other aggressive herps then I think with no kids and the proper set up its just fine.No handling, food slots, full gloves and boots, locks, tongs, hooks, blah blah you know the rest.I would love to have a few types myself.I however cant do it in cali.If you have not kept and mastered some of the difficult and aggressive snakes already I would do that first and see how fast things can go wrong. It only takes one bad move.Depends on the person, just like how some ppl can fly jets and some only little prop planes.More ppl Im sure get killed on motorbikes every day than snake bites but the chance is always lurking. So like before, try a good several years with some harder non vens before and if not then I say no way.Oh and if you ever get a gila and get scared, send it to me:Dand please dont do it just because it sounds cool and you want ppl to see you like your the wild boys or some crappola. You need to have a pure passion for them if you go that route. Please check all laws and dont do it if you can live without it,if something goes wrong it makes the news and we all look bad.Good luck.
