Has anyone got ideas on filtering sludge out befor trickel filter?

I have a problem with this brown sludge laying on the bottom of the filter. what I've been doing is siphoning it out every week when I make water changes. My thouth is to put a five gallon bucket after the over-flow and drill a hole in the top side of the bucket and put a bulk-head in it then connect this to the top of the filter for gravity flow in to it.Also drill small hole bottom of bucket to drain it out.
What I wonder is the sludge coming out of the over-flow or is it being made after flowing down thru the bio-balls. ANY THOUHTS ON THIS???

Maybe add a filter to your sump. Im planning on doing this to keep anything from building up in my sump after the filter sock.
