Hey everyone. Just went to clean out my pond and I noticed some sort of solid black goldfish. It isn't a koi or anything, just a generic goldfish like the ones you get as feeders. This thing is solid black with no spots or anything. I thought this was a little odd so I called my dad up who has been keeping fish his whole like and he said that he has never seen one before. I've seen plenty of solid black fancy goldfish, but none like this. has anyone heard of this before?

I have I know the word midnight is in the name. They've been gettting popular in the last few years. They aren't real easy to come by.

Black goldfish aren't really uncommon. Just as black koi aren't uncommon.

unlike koi though, the goldfish do fade a bit to more of a dark grey.

Thats one of the issues with the black goldfish, is most are a similar to koi, and quite a few are sterile. Meaning some are labeled as goldfish and aren't this conversation was a few years ago, if I remembered where I'd post the limk for you. Enjoy your blackie :)

Black koi are not sterile.

And black koi are not sold as goldfish because koi have barbels.

Not to mention, black koi go for a higher price than most koi. So the store can get more money by keeping it properly labeled.

great barracuda's right, you just have what sounds like a common goldfish, they mostly start off dark and then go orange quite early but it is quite common for some never to turn orange
