Im thinking about turning my whole tank black including painting the wood surround and stand,

i was thinking black back, and bottom of the tank
Then i would try to stick on some back cardboard or refuse bags to the side (just to see if i liked the sides covered or not)

then use slate as substrate or buy some black gravel,

has anyone ever done this or does it look awful? anyone got any pics or anything :D

cheers :D

want something a little different thant he normal clear or bright blue background tanks:screwy:

got a forty gallon like that.

Yeah I've seen a few tanks like that on the site here and am actually planning on doing one myself. I'm going to do a small planted tank with a black planted back and black sand mixed with black flourite.

looks and works fine.. however keep in mind your fish may try to blend in.. all depends on what fish you are keeping..

aka.. it works great for clown loaches but not so good for dats..

I had a black background and black sand. I'll be honest...it was too dark. Depends on the fish you want. I had some Dats that were stable and looked good, but then were unstabled and they just disappeared in the darkness. Same with a Jag, Chinese Perch, Pbass, and Knives. The only fish that were able to stand out were a Silver Aro, GT, and Albino Oscar.

Black works well for my cichlids. I mixed a tiny bit of red into the gravel as well cuz I wanted to. It made the base color of my JD turn black and it brought more color out of my jewel cichlids too. Also gave my red devil a black back. Didn't affect my severum, GT, salvini, oscar, or black acara though.
