Recently I was offered a 300 gallon glass aquarium due to it springing a leak. I know how to break down and reseal a tank, but I am (as would be expected) a bit nervous about trying it with somthing this size.

The idea of moving this thing, building a stand, and setting it up just to have it leak again seems almost to be a deal breaker, but not quite. I'm a teacher, and this tank would be the perfect compliment to the twin 220g I already have in my classroom, but the idea of having a tank failure in the classroom is a bit worrysome as wel.

... so whats the point of this post?

I'm just looking for anyone with first hand experiance resealing a tank this size (96 x 24 x 30) or bigger for encouragment / discouragement and possibly a link to a build thread for 300 plus glass aquariums

I used the search function, but found mostly smaller tanks

Thanks

If it is leaking from the bottom it will be allot of work. Side seams are easier and usually can be done by yourself.

It's leaking from the side, but If I'm going to do this, I'm thinking I should take the whole thing apart and redo all the seals and joints

Man, your students must love u! If any of my classes had two 220s and a 300 I would have never paid attention lol. I wouldn't worry about resealing it tho, if you think about it a 300 isn't much different from a 55 when there are tanks 10x that size out there but I'm about to reseal a 240g acrylic tank so I understand your concern. As long as you know what you're doing and seal it properly it should turn out just as strong as it was new. Sure there's more risk of water damage if some kid accidentally breaks it, but that's what local property taxes are for :p

thanks for the encouragment guys. Pigoo let me know how it goes and feel free to link your thread if you started one on the reseal.

i recently resealed a 112g(5x18x24) and i would say im not a handyman at all(also built a stand). i watched a lot of videos on tank making though. i did a better job than the person i bought it from but it wasnt "perfect" look wise. i had a few ugly spots of silicone, because i was loling when i had silicone all over the place. what i found that worked great to make the seams nicer(i rushed it a bit which i probably didnt have to because i was worried the silicone would cure) was i used masking tape to make that nice straight look and instead of using my finger, i used an old pill bottle bottom and dragged it ualong the seam making a proffesional look in most of the seams.... in hindsight i woulve had a wiping rag at some point, because the excess got all over my hands. i didnt take the tank apart eventhough one of the corner wasnt really sealed... i just put a bit more silicone and when i was finished i clamped it. about 4 or 5days later i filled it halfway and it was fine. waited another day and filed it up completely. I would take note how much silicone was originally used by manufacturers. then find a bottle that would make the desired effect. id over clean the seams if possible! a 112g was a bit tight to move in and im 5'6, you should have lots of room to work in yours. I started laughing because i did it barefoot and with such a tight squeeze to move and turn i stepped on some silicone i dripped in the middle.it was either that or the fumes.

sorry forgot one other thing, when i took off the masking tape in the croners i had a bit of trouble, and though it doesnt leak i did mess up the nice profession look. for a bigger tank i would wait a week or more for the silicone to cure.

With the masking tape trick, you have to remove it really slowly right after you've done the silicone job and leave it to set for a week to be safe...
