i have seen some fhs that have an ebjd look to them and i have had bad luck buying ebjds. they seem pretty easy to kill off. but anyway, what i was thinking is that i would buy one of these fhs instead. fhs are tough and not at all easy to kill.
my jds have never paired with any other species so i am assuming that they are not the easiest fish to cross. tell me if i am wrong. i hope that i am.

any hybrid with the ebjd is ok. i think that even a female fh would probably kill an ebjd during breeding. a longer term breeding project would be needed to get the genes into a flowerhorn. i just want to see if it is likely to get a cross to start with

Did you just answer your own question?

yea he just answered it. i dont know about jack dempseys and fh cross its a rare event. the closest to jd's are texas and red texas. but as far as electric blue. hmmm im not too sure. ebjd's are very passive fishes and fh's are just straight evil. so with all the nonsense im leaving up 3 in the morning, my conclusion to the question is its impossible. anyone want to run me over with a better answer?

I think you would just be weakening the genes of future FH since ebjds fragile etc.

First of all, and EBJD's genes are recessive so you wouldn't see any of their traits anyway, just the traits of a regular dempsey. Maybe the offspring would have a blue gene and you could mate that one back to the ebjd and possibly have something but like what was said earlier, probably impossible and I am not sure that would even work.

i would try to cross a texas with it first to make stonger fry.
it is a recessive gene, but the gene has already been isolated from the dominant jd gene so i think it could be passed on. i guess i will have to try it.

my old Female FH God bless her soul died by jumping out the tank... but non the less she looked to have some Jack in her... There are ways to get passed the aggression... im sure the breeding section will help... I.e. eggcrates with a flower pot evenly placed under the egg crate leaving space the the female to drop eggs and male to fertilize... they have no physical contact with each other... i have not tried this method yet as my fish get along. but people say it has worked..

thank you. i know that jacks can do it. they aren't as easy to get to crossbreed as some other fish. it does look like some of the new fhs coming out have ebjd blood in them. i will probably just buy one of those. that fh pic blowout thread had some fry that looked alot like ebjd fry.
if i can't find a 4 to 8 inch ebjd, i won't buy one. it is amazing how fast they go from eating like a normal cichlid, to not eating and dead. my lfs sells 1-1.5 inch fry for 75 bucks. way too much for a fish that you have a 1 in 5 chance of raising to adulthood. that is the reason for this thread. i wanted to see if anyone got them to cross with anything. the same reason i seemed to answer my own question.
