When I got a used tank off craigslist one time I had gotten for my sisters birthday and I got pink gravel for it because it would look nicer for a girl and her favorite color. So I buy like 30 pounds of pink gravel at a petco thinking this is enough for a 55 gallon ( I don't know what I was thinking) and I bring it home to set up the tank and it's bot even putting more than one inch of gravel which I need for this planted tank and I go back to petco and they have no more pink gravel so I just bought a couple bags 60 pounds so I have a thick layer and it was black gravel so it was mainly black with some pink gravel all over the top black layer actually looked very nice. She ended up not wanting it but was still really happy with her betta i had stocked in it temporarily so I had to get rid of it or my dad would have killed me if I got another tank. I gave it to my cousin for her birthday lol dual purposes. And my sister still has the betta but he is on his final stretch it has been one and a half years and this betta was strong and healthy but is barely swimming now

You can definitely use two different color substrates, but if the two substrates are different sizes they might separate into two layers. This would just mean you have to stir the substrate every now and then to mix it which isn't a bad thing anyway.

Just got rid of black and white substrate I prefer all one color , all Black or all white, the fish I think color up bolder

I like all one color with accents of another.

For example I use black sand but for my rocks I use lighter colors.
