Has "LOL" replaced periods at the end of a sentence?

So it seems like nowadays the word "LOL" has pretty much replaced using a period at the end of a sentence. It's everywhere, even in thread titles. And it seems like most people can't type a sentence without using the word "LOL". I know even I'm guilty sometimes LOL So what is this strange phenomena?

And why do we say "LOL". 98% of the time we aren't even laughing, but still feel compelled to tell the other party "LOL".

oh and i've noticed it's a perfect way to end a conversation, especially via text messaging. when you have nothing else to say, just say "LOL" and the conversation is done. LOL
