I do not know what is wrong with my Ornate Bichir, at first she ate krill, mealworms, earthworms, chunks of fish meat but I also observed that she started to become picky! after having one she would refuse the previous meal until for awhile. She totally rejected prawns.

She would swim fine and look for food at the bottom, even by digging up the gravels which broke my heart when she seemed to eat the gravels! ( I understand they have poor eye sight that they can't really differentiate between food and gravels ). Then I would provide mealworms and as soon as she sniffed them she would snap her jaw as if she is not impressed and swim away from it! the same behaviour to earthworms. Fine, what about feeder fish? Alright then I baught it, but she made poor attempts at striking them and I do not know if she ate at all. Last night in the dark I kept hearing snaps after snaps ( not sure if it was exactly her as I have her with a Gar and Climbing Perch ), and in the morning her tummy looked filled a little, I wish she was successful being a nocturnal.

But earlier today as she's hungry again she ahhhhhhh ate gravels! and instead of all the food I have been giving her, my Gar's stool attracted her and she ate them! I am going to change to a different substrate so she can't eat it...*sighs*...what substrate do you guys use for your Polypterus? Looks like I have chances of losing her from impaction huh?
waaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaa! And I don't think she has eaten well at all although she looks just fine. I changed water, changed the level of salt just wondering if they could have been any cause to it and no, she's still with that same attitude.

she still looks healthy in the pic.. try to remove the gravel or replace it with sand.

my ornati is kinda weird too, i also rarely see him eat but he is still fat. and he sleeps upside leaning towards the aquarium glass.

Sleeping upside leaning towards the aquarium glass? Lol funny, this fish is unpredictable! I am going to remove the gravels. I thought about sand but I read in an article that some even eat sand..I'll see what I can do though. True she does look healthy, the eaten gravels cannot come out right? Wouldn't it be dangerous for her?:( I wonder how she feels! when I saw her eating gravels I was speechless and a part of me felt like giving up...sad, will stop it.

More pics ( Just taken awhile ago ):

if it keeps eating the sand, you can get rocks as the substrate that are too big for her to swallow. nice bicher :)

She ate! although I have not changed the substrate yet I gave her earthworms and she ate eagerly! she sensed my Gar's stool and she backed away! what a shift in behaviour!

But yes I must change the gravels, something like rocks is what I have in mind, thank you very much for the suggestions, I must put there what she cannot eat. To see her breathing air at the surface with little gravels dropping from her gills is:eek: !

Here comes the Dragon, that good baby, new pictures:

awsome birchir, mine had the same problems. i ended up giving him a place to hide and I stick a stick in with some gutloaded lake smelt directly into the cave she lives in, takes awhile but she always eats it.
