So recently I have 2 angels that have begun breeding on a regular basis and am considering building a hatchery. I have a few more that I am hoping I will get at least one more pair out of.

I am looking for some advice on how to build a hatchery and if its even feasible considering the amount of fish I could end up with. I guess i could talk to a few LFS's and see if they would be interested in making a deal for a bulk price. I have no experience in this sort of market, but it could potentially bring me a decent credit with some LFS's that could fulfill my MTS. Does anyone know if LFS's ussually do this sort of deal? I have traded with my usual LFS (marine warehouse, Tampa) I'm sure they save on the shipping cost if I breed and sell to them. But I just wanted to know if anyone has had any luck with this. I'm not expecting to have them outright pay for an entire new tank or anything but any money that I could save would be fantastic since...ya know....I'm not well off.

Anyway on to my possible hatchery setup. I want to get some industrial shelving with 5 shelving units, possibly 4 since the size of the tanks would limit height. From top to bottom would have 3 10 gallons, one 20 tall, and one 20 long as the sump. Since height of the shelving unit would limit the amount of space I have for water changes and my ability to add and remove fry/fish, I have thought of building a bulkhead to connect the 20 tall and 20 long allowing for more room between tanks. My reasoning for such a setup is that I technically would only need one heater and one pump for the entire setup, since I can use an over flow system from tank to tank. I want it to be as compact and cheap as possible since I will be putting this in my apartment and need to save on space. Ability to put this setup in my walk-in closet is preferred.

Does that sound like a suitable setup for a hatchery? Are that many tanks necessary for breeding and sale? Considering I have the correct water flow and filtration. Has anyone ever taken on breeding and sale for profit with success?

Dude here on craiglist is a Aquaponics Buissness for sale. All the big stock tanks to breed fish.

Sounds cool but I only want a small hatchery for my angels as a small source of income to alleviate some of the cost in future purchases. Not really looking to start a LFS just yet...lol. Would they have a compact setup I could fit out of sight in my apartment?

Haha get a long tank And put dividers in it. Like 10x1x2 high. Find a store that will either buy or trade you fish. Angles are a good one to do that with. At our store we can never keep the babies in stock.

Thats good to hear with the angel stock. I'm pretty sure I could work out a deal with my LFS. I was talking to the owner the other day and he told me that is cost him $3500 to have $750 worth of product delivered. That was thru FedEx if I remember correctly. I really don't know how he even makes a profit on something like that. Most of the shipment was saltwater fish, but still he has considered cutting his stock to mostly freshwater as the prices have risen on shipping with airlines as of late, and a number of people have started switching to freshwater since its cheaper for botht he consumer and the supplier.

For the setup I am considering the only thing I would need is 3 10 gallons, a heater, a pond pump and then pvc for the overflows. And of course a shelving unit. Wouldn't it cost more to buy a tank that size? 10x1x2 high?

Theres no way it cost that much. We order like 500 to 1000 every week. We get threw Fedex or sometimes the company brings them. And we make alot of profit. What hes saying is impossible and more than likely we order from the same supplier.

Depends how hard you look for one. LOL But use what u got. So are you talking about hooking the 3 tanks up to one system? A guy on here built a fish room like this. Had the wholes drilled so that he could have one overflow for all the tanks stacked and went into the sump.
