Has anyone ever kept silver hatchet fish with medium size cichlids? I want to put some in my 155g tank that is 31in tall to have something that stays at the very top, but there will be several medium sized cichlids, such as a blue acara, fire mouth, flier, sajica, and "geo" iporangensis. I'm not too worried about these fish bothering the hatchets since the hatchets will be on top and the others will stay on the bottom mostly, plus there will be plenty of other cichlids and loaches, catfish, etc as targets, and none of these fish are super aggressive, but I am wondering if when both the hatchets and the cichlids are gown up if the cichlids will be able to eat them.

I have heard acaras for example, when full grown can and will eat fish two inches and under, however since the hatchets have such deep bodies I thought perhaps that may be ok?

I kept silver hatchets in a group with several medium sized geophagus and smaller acaras as well with success. I'm not sure how they would do long term with semi aggressive cichlids like firemouths.

Also they like to jump ship fairly regularly and I was picking them up off the floor during feeding time. No worse for the ware however.

Big body won't get them 1 shot whole swallow but it won't save them from bully until dead then got tear a part piece by piece. :D

Ok, thanks. I may give them a try once that tank is ready to go. The Firemouth or the Sajica are probably the most aggressive of the fish that will be in there, but I just really don't think they will be up at the top of that tank a whole lot.
