On a recent trip to my lfs (the only one in the area which carries a decent amount of saltwater supplies and fish) I inquired as to whether they would be selling live rock anytime soon. The owner said that "Live rock is a great way to kill a tank". I put two large peices in along with some regular rocks before cycling the tank, and they are still in there. They seemed to help, and other than the possibilty of pests hitching a ride on the rock (which is easily remedied by curing), are there any other serious consequences? The rock I have in the tank has not caused any problems, so I am wondering if this guy is just :screwy:

I'll go out on a limb and say that owner shouldn't sell saltwater animals.

Whether you buy 'live rock' or you put rock in a marine tank (with time it becomes 'live rock'). It's not really a choice of IF you have it, it's HOW you get it.

The up side (in my opinion) of buying it is that there are always "feebies" crawling around on them. I've aquired quite the collection of small inverts and other little livng things on live rock.

Not sure what he meant by "killing a tank".

that guy sounds like an idiot. I've set up full fish tanks with live rock added the same day. You just gotta know how to shop for already cured rock without dead or dying stuff

I've gotten lots of neat goodies. Feather dusters, copepods, crabs(which I never want) among other cool things. Once i got a brain coral that survived. it was the size of a baseball.

Oh, and one consequence could be this;

If you do not cure your live-rock, or if you have fresh live rock it could cause an Ammonia spike in your tank. Often times when live-rock is brand new, alot of organisms die off which causes an ammonia spike. Great for cycling tank, but if you add uncured live-rock to an established tank, it could kill it all off.

Unfortunately, that guy is a complete moron.. He probably did this to himself once, and is too ignorant to learn why it happened nor admit that he will ever be wrong.. I hate people like that. You should give him a peice of my mind! :)

My reef tank is filtered only by live rock, high water circulation and a big skimmer, it is the natural way of going through the nitrogen cycle.

That man should work in McDonalds rather than sell fish.
