What substrate should i use? My reverse osmosis water has a ph of 6.2 is that good for apistos, blue rams, and bolivian rams? What kind of filter should i use on the 20 gallon high? Fake or live plants?

The pH is pretty much perfect for dwarfs. I usually see a lighter colored substrate for the little guys. If you get a really vibrant one, then I'd try a darker substrate.

Yeah go for a darker sand color maybe chocolate brown or black. 6.2 is fine for apistos and microgeophagus. Lower pH i noticed makes their colors more intense. Use lots of driftwood as well as many live plants with a nice T5 light fixture. I would just use a sponge filter or maybe an AC 50.

I guess get a small bag of flourite depending on the plants your keeping. What are you planing? Also lighting is essential when having a planted tank. You can however take some cheap short cuts by just putting some power glo or aqua glo bulbs in you fixture but this is only for hardy plants which need minimal light.
