have problems with BLT

I just added a BLT to my tank of Oscars,they attacked it right away.Not only that but my pH level dropped and nitrates are through the roof.I'm just new to this but i think the acidity is from the tomatoes,and nitrates are high because of the bacon?any thoughts OJ chaser,some toast maybe
