have thoughts on my rope fish

hey i was wondering if anyone can ask my question!

my rope fish started to branch out its gills, i was wondering if it is normal growth or it just changed over time?
because i've had my rope fish for about a year and only after two months the gills are showing

Do you have any pics? That doesn't sound normal. He might have parasites and/or an infection or you might have problems with your water parameters. Check the ammonia, nitrites and nitrates.

I had several adult ropefish for a long time. Their gills just look like regular gills.
