Hey everyone. I asked this question months ago but had no responses so I'll try again. Say you are going to do a water change and vacuum. Your fish had been fighting so there are some cuts and missing scales. Will the bacteria released into the water from the vacuuming infect my fish? I hope someone can give me some answers, Ed.

I don't have a certain answer but I've done it and haven't had any ill results happen. If anything it helps the fish heal faster by providing a clean environment to heal

Stirring up the gravel wouldn't make more or less bacteria. Vacuuming the gravel would make it less.

Agreed, subtraight vacuming and water changes are always good. You could add a little salt to the water if you don't have any salt sensative fish to facilatate healing and slime coat production. Otherwise I don;t see an issue.

The bacteria in the gravel are already in the water. When done properly, there should be little debris stirred up while vacuuming the gravel.

vacum but don't stir up the gravel also add mela fix to help with the cuts.

I wasn't talking about me, I was just wondering.

Lake beaches are often closed after large wind storms because the bottom gets stirred up and bacteria is floating around.

While it is true vacuuming doesn't "create" bacteria, if it goes from being stuck at the bottom to free floating it could be an issue.

That being said if the tank is healthy and you do regular cleanings it shouldn't be an issue.

^THIS^
do not stir the substrate. push the vacc head down into it, then pull up & let the substrate fall directly down out of it, hover the vacc pipe above there & all disturbed debris will be directly pulled OUT with the siphon.
move on & repeat.
this will accomplish a water change at same time. Refill tank with fresh water.
