water_baby83 said:Sadly, yes I have done that. The good news, lol, it wasn't mine. I was interning (for my second summer) at a local aquarium a few years back. I was cleaning the inside of a 200,000 shark display. ---Ok, here we go, lol.
I had decided to use only an emergency tank (the little ones that go into your mouth), instead of a full harness. My partner however, was the smarter of us two, he opted for full gear. Well, we were cleaning along peacefully, the sharks observing quietly, and all was fine. That is until some of the other keepers "forgot" we were down there, and decided it was dinner time. Now in a smaller pool, they would have speared the fish, and tried to feed the sharks manually, however, with this tank, typically they just dropped loads in various places around the tank, and it became a "free for all" of sorts. Well, about 10 minutes into the cleaning, I noticed a fish head sink past me. I looked up, and it was raining guts! My partner was already freaking out, and decided he no longer wanted to be the "look out". So he litterally threw the staff at me, and grabbed onto me for dear life. (we used a banded metal staff, that supposedly the sharks were "trained" to avoid. ) well, at this point we were on-top of the walk tunnel for viewers, and he had tangled the net we used to keep a semi-barrier between us and the sharks. He was going insane, running through his o2 like there was no tomorrow (poor thing had only started 2 weeks before this, and this was supposed to be his "training" clean). He was squeezing me so hard i thought i was gonna pop!! Well, I tried as best i could to signal to him that we couldnt surface until the feeding was nearing an end, as they were right above us, and with nothing around us, we couldn't make a break for it. I tried to keep him calm, but in all his panic, he ended up slamming me up against the veiwing tunnel --staff first. (by the way, i cracked two ribs from that one, and got a nasty blow to the head from his tanks) We heard a splitting crack, and noticed we had punctured a layer of the plexi. Both of us were like "OOHHH S**T!!!!!!!" We had to wait another 10 minutes before the sharks had calmed down, and resumed their lazy strolls before we could surface. When it was ok to go up, I motioned to my partner to lead, as he was nearly out of o2. He refused, and clung to me like a child. He was already twice my size, and with full gear. he clung onto me like a freaking hemroid!! I had to swim for my life just to reach the surface, as my air was gone (he knocked it out of my mouth when he body slammed me), and I had to take a breath of his. By the time I got up, and the crew pulled me out, I could barely breath, let alone tell them we broke the tunnel. Well, we told 'em, and the big man got called down. I was sweating bullets!!! The good news was, that it was a multi layer, and we had only cracked the 1st of 3. So the only thing flooded, was the space in between. Not much at all. (whew). The bad thing is, the guy was so traumatized by the "prank" the others had pulled on us by an early feeding, that he quit right then and there, cussing everyone out----including me!!!! Later I found out that it was no accident at all, lol, they had decided that was going to be his innitiation into our "group"!! Real sweet huh! Best part of all, the big boss man just laughed, called me an "air-head" (which was his nick name for me), and gave me a pat on the back for saving him the money from having to add a pansy onto his payroll. LOL
