KNEW JEEZY
fish keepers ? share your stories !

I have a lot of coworkers who has fishtanks in their homes and has been in the hobby for a couple years. I have a friend who gravel vac and changes tankwater to about 50 percent every 3 months. He always says that he only buy catfish bcus its the only fish that survives within a couple months... (55g tank)

I also know a guy who has a fish tank and do the same process every 6 months, same story goes, only fishes he COULD keep are oscars and catfish....(125g)

One guy changes the filter and water every year !!!!!!!!!!!!! only fish he could keep are goldfish(30g)....Its a shame they don't have the passion and dedication like we do. When i told them my routine on how to clean and maintain my tank, they started laughing and saying that water chages every week is overkill and a waste of time.

So one day i decided to bring these guys to my house to check out my fish tanks (mind you i have 3 ). THey were in a disbelieve how healthy my fishes are and how clear my tankwater is !:naughty:

after this , they all changed their routine and followed my advise on fishkeeping. Up to now, they are glad that i showed them how to be a more responsibe fishkeeper, and they enjoy the hobby more than ever before.

Deep inside, i feel like i've made a difference in peoples lives and i feel really good about it. But whats more important is that i wanna thank this site, and its members, for helping me a more knowledgable FISHKEEPER.

Monsterfishkeepers.com FTW ! :WHOA:

i once sold plants to a women who spent $1000 on a 29 gallon tank, that did not have fish or even decent filtration. that's the worse i have encountered. the typical uneducated person im subjected to, just keeps Oscars in 15 gallon tanks and has never heard of cycling. - im use to that.

I met a guy that seemed to know a fair bit about cichlids and their care. He had a few breeding tanks, changed water weekly, knew all about the nitrogen cycle etc etc.
Only problem was he called them chill-ids.
Just thought it was really strange that he knew so much about them, but couldnt even pronouce the name.

i work with someone who has never done a waterchange "because i have live plants".

I know a few people who still do once yearly water changes. They remove the fish and place them in a separate container, drain out and discard all of their water, remove all gravel and rinse it,before adding replacement water that has been sitting for a few days.

That's great, sharing is caring. I change 20% on my 5 tanks every Sat and Wed. I don't care how tired I am, lugging water back and forth (and I have a python...go figure), getting splashed on and an occasional nip is all worth it to me.

Whenever people come over and see my tanks I always seem to get the question "How often do you have to clean it?" I tell them that I do 25%-30% water changes weekly. And every time they say "No I mean how often do you have to take everything out and clean it?" I tell them never and they are surprised. So many people out there think this is a normal part of fish keeping.

My neighbor has a 30 gal tank with no filter and like 15 assorted cichlids, 2 frys of babies, shrimp and crayfish. he swears the crayfish and shrimp are somehow filtering the water and just dumps some stress zyme in every couple weeks..:grinno:

Did i ever meet an uneducated Fishkeeper? once yes, it was me :(

I still dont know much about many fish species but the general 'fishkeeping' jest, im good :grinno:
