So about a year ago I went in to a pet shop to buy some fish. I asked the employee about a fish and I was told it was an Albino Tropheus duboisi
And it was the same price as the other duboisi so I bought it. When I Google albino tropheus duboisi this is what I found ( see link). I paid $50 for it.

Have this ever happened to you?

Lucky!
I bought a group of 6 skunk loaches from Liveaquaria and got some Sun loaches mixed in (very happy with them) and some green rhodactis from Liveaquaria and got some crappy purple/brown shrooms instead.

I can guarantee it happens every day at a lfs.
I purchased a small Synodontis Angelicus for $7.00 because it was in a aquarium with Synodontis Laced Catfish. The lfs associate didn't have a clue about difference between the 2 species.

I've posted about this before. I bought 3 rather cute little catfish after the guy told me they were peaceful com cats that didn't exceed 8".

I got home and googled and discovered they were Colombian cat sharks, extremely predatory with a potential to reach 2'.

I netted them out of my tank the next day and back they went. Shame really, they were gorgeous fish.

Found an ornate at petco for 10 dollars. Labeled as the proper bichir but a steal. Sad I didn’t get it.
Also plenty of the 25 dollar “assorted corals” at petco are some pretty expensive stuff (sinularia, lobophytum, etc.) Got 5 corals for 125 for some heads which were at least 50 each.

I was about to reply, even before I got to tlindsey tlindsey 's answer. Had to laugh when I read his.

I bought a small handful of Java Moss on impulse in a small store in another town (hard stuff to find back then), and asked them to pack it with some water and tied shut with air because of how long it would take me to get home. I was on my bike and did some leisurely riding around, stopped for lunch, stopped for a couple of pics at scenic lookouts, and generally putzed around the rest of the day. I kept the saddlebags shaded because of the plants, but didn't baby them in any other way.

Rolled into my driveway looking forward to a hot dinner and a cold beer, casually tromped into the basement to the fishroom, plopped the moss into a bucket of water and turned to go...and saw movement. Fished out the critter, expecting a dragonfly nymph or maybe even a guppy...and was completely bamberflazzlegoosted to see a Synodontis angelicus cat about an inch long!

Those fish were much more expensive then than they are now...and they're still not cheap. Had that fish for almost 10 years, gave it away only because I was moving.

As my wife said, good things happen to good people, but they sometimes also happen to...well, I won't actually repeat what she said. :)

Shop we had here years ago had a practice of keeping multiple species of fish in their tanks with names and prices written on the glass in bright colored magic marker.A lot of the less attentive employees who worked there would bag up fish and seemingly write any name and price on the bag that seemed to match to them.

I can't count all the times I've seen LFSs misidentify fish.
I've seen Tilapia listed as grammodes, even something as common as JDs sold as FMs.
I bought a buttikoeri that was sold for $1.99 as a common aquarium strain severum.
And Australoheros sold for $0.50 as convicts.
I have even argued with employees trying to set them straight about rare fish that were obviously worth more than they were asking, to no avail.
And I've seen posts here on MFK where people believe they have a certain species, because that's what it was sold as.
But the photo posted it was obviously something else.

The Wet Spot labeled this guy as wild Andinoacara Stalsbergi

When it's actually a White/Silver Saum Rivilatus.

I love the Wet Spot, but they got this one wrong.
