I have been kicking around the idea for a tall corner tank for over two weeks now. (Well longer, but I have gotten serious in the last two weeks.) I am a competent craftsman in almost any material. With a few small tanks under my belt already. So this isn't to daunting of a task for me.
The tank is going to be at the least 3 foot tall, preferably taller... I am a tall guy and I have always liked really tall tanks. They just aren't something you can run down to the store and buy off the shelf.
I am thinking of using plywood and fiberglass for the back two sides and the bottom of this tank. But I am really running into an issue for the glass for the front viewing pane. The issue of needing glass that's is over 1/2 inch thick. Is proving to be a huge pain. The local glass shop quoted me a 2x4 sheet of 1/2 inch at over three times the cost of their 1/4 inch. When I asked about the 3/4th inch they quoted me at about 10 times as much.
I am starting to suspect part of that was a charge for beveling the edges due to a misunderstanding. It has to be, 345$ (tax included) just seems WAY to much.
Glass Cages is well over hundred dollars cheaper for the same size. Its even almost a hundred cheaper if I get their starfire glass. I just have the headache of having to meet the truck for shipment. (I am a long ways from any of their stops.)
Any one else have a good cheaper place to order glass? Or some recommendations to finding a better price? There are not many glass shops that are closer then an hour away. I am going to get out the phone book this weekend and start making calls to other cities.
I am not having good luck searching online I keep finding Stain Glass craft stuff mostly if I search for any thing like "glass supplier."
Also one thing I was trying to research was sticking 3 panes of 1/4 inch glass together like they do in the gorilla and elephant exhibits at the zoo. I can't seem to find any thing on that. I did find one thread on here but it was fairly useless other then stating that it could be done. That was all I have found in over 4 days of dredging the internet, I am really good at finding information, there just doesn't seem to be any out there.
At my current quoted rates though 4 sandwiched panes of glass (makeing 1 inch total) is cheaper then the price they gave me for 1/2 of an inch pannel. Which makes me really intrested in going this route if its going to be safe and strong enough.
Any help solving my pains with panes would be appreciated. (Couldn't resist the pun any longer
