Having 2 substrate in a tank?

Hi. I want to get khuli loaches but I heard they like sand to burrow in. I have Eco complete gravel but not much in my 40 gallon. Any way of separating the 2 in one tank?

You could layer the sand on top of the Eco-Complete or half it or make a little "design" pattern like a path way.

Mine don't burrow but love to sift through the sand looking for tidbits of food.

Ya with a digging fish it won't happen. I've seen planted tanks with sand and a plant substrate but only tetras or something in there

I would take out all the current substrate and put a 1"-3" layer of sand. Then put the substrate into it and ontop. That's what I did on my 15 gallon fry tank.
