Hi guys! So here's the deal. I'm getting a 55 gallon in just over a month, which I'm very excited about. At the moment I have a 35 gallon with an Opaline Gourami, Male Betta (even though the Gourami and the Betta shouldn't get along they have not had even one scuffle), and a small 2" Red Tail Black Shark (who will be moved to the 55 when I get it.)
When I get the 55 I plan on keeping the Red Tailed Black Shark along with a Jack Dempsey. I'm hoping to get the JD when he's maybe ~5" long, so he SHOULD leave the RTBS alone. If not, I will give the RTBS to my LFS.
I'm also very interested in Pictus Catfish! So I have a few questions.
First, are they compatible with the RTBS and a JD?

If so...
Do they need to be kept with other Pictus Cats, or can they be kept as the only one?
What is the minimum required tank size for these guys?
What's the best thing to feed them?
Could they be kept in my 35 for just over a month to grow them up a bit before they go into the 55 with the young JD?

Please let me know about any potential issues with this - I AM a bit of a newbie at fish keeping, so I still have a lot to learn!
Thanks!

Most people recommend keeping them in groups, but I also know many people keep them singly. I have one in my 55gal cichlid tank and it seems just fine on it's own. I think the minimum tank size is a 55, because they are so active. I have lots of caves and things for mine to hide in if he wants to get away from the cichlids for a bit. I feed mine shrimp pellets and cichlid pellets. I don't see how having them in a 35 for a little while would harm them. They are fun fish to keep. Mine will take pellets from my hand.
