haven't been on in the longest time. I caught this 6lb Bonefish (called O'io in hawaii) from surf casting from shore. he gave me a pretty good fight took about 50 yards out, but it wasn't exactly fair since my set up is a penn 9500ss, 65lb power pro, 12' daiwa fast action rod.
Id say the water was 6 or 7 feet at the deepest. I cast my bait (4" strip of squid) right on the edge of a channel and he hit it hard. It would've been a serious fight on a fly rod, because bone fish tend to run toward you and create slack line and i was using a highspeed spinning reel but on a 1:1 fly reel, have fun with that. Average size at that spot is around 2-5lbs the biggest landed in our group was 11lbs and I lost one that i'd say could've been 12lbs or more with the amount of line he took out.
Nice oi'o, and yes they fight really hard, but the good thing is that you dont have to worry about the jaw breaking, like moi, when your fighting them. Where in hawaii are you? Theres a bunch of them on kauai. Over here on big island there are almost none. My father caught a 14lb O'io on oahu about 10 years back. That was alot of work to do when we got home with the rolling pin. We had fish cake for days. What you gonna do with it? make fish cake?
you hear wrong then
which coast we talking gulf or pacific?
either way, from what ive fished before marlin wise, always use butterfish i think thats what there called
or small wahoo trolling
never bonefish though! thats awful i think why use such a great sport fish for bait
what i know is true is that in europe they use stray cats and dogs as bait for giant sharks
