Oahu, Hawaii via Florida
Alright, I have tried to join a couple of Hawaiian fishing forums now, and I have been waiting patiently for like a week to be approved by the mods. I have been wanting to ask some questions about fishing around Oahu. So has anyone hear ever fished the island? Freshwater and Saltwater? Any recent info on the UH query pond?

Lake Wilson is a freshwater reservior with all kinds of bass, pbasss, red devils, blue gills, needlenose, koi, talapia, catfish,......However, you need a fishing permit which you can get at WalMart. Bass is catch and release.
The UH at Manoa pond is small and has bass in it.

I believe last summer lake Wilson was off limits but I may be wrong. Idk how it is right now, but I'd say if it's available for public fishing it's your best bet for freshwater.

It was open for fishing last year, but you have to get a fishing license from Walmart in Millilani to go fishing at lake Wilson.

Op, you'll have a ton of fun scoop netting for fish. As for ocean fishing, Yokohama's is a good place. I would recommend spear fishing.

Are the feral freshwater fish legal to collect and keep? I may be going next spring and wouldn't mind checking out the fishing and possibly shipping some back to myself. I'm thinking of doing that for saltwater fish for a tank and I've read that it is perfectly legal with the required permits. Just don't try keeping live rock and coral.

The freshwater fishing seems to be very heavily regulated. They have closed areas to fishing and you have to have a permit to fish in freshwater, but not salt water. Lake Wilson is full of peaks and other fish that south Florida doesn't have, like little tetras. Collection of fish is heavily regulated. Even the university of hawaii has to go through strenuous permitting process to collect freshwater fish, because of the state's struggle to maintain endemic species. It is also really hard to find any infromation about freshwater fishing.

I went there this past week, and brought a rod with me. I fished waikiki and caught some ladyfish and jacks. The locals were all pretty nice about spreading local knowledge of saltwater fishing, and even keyed me into a spot where you could feed huge bonefish bread. Unfortunately very few knew about freshwater fishing, and I talked to fishermen from the north, south, and windward shores. They all call peaks tucanare, the Brazilian name for them, and they knew they exist, but they didn't seem to care about actually going to collect or catch them. Even after I told them they tasted good haha. They said salt water fishing was easier too. I didn't actually go to Lake Wilson, but I bet the locals around there could help you find about collecting exotics etc...
