a few days ago i converted my bare bottom bichir tank, back to a nice fine black substrate, and not only does it look much nicer, the endli's seem to love it!

I notice that they love burying there heads partialy in the sand and after coutless hours of watching this behaviour i am convinced it has everything to do with ambushing prey...

One thing that i have noticed however, is that out of the four polys residing in the tank, ( 3x endli and 1x del ) it only seems to be the endlis that do it... not once have i witnessed this behaviour by the del, so i am wondering...is this mainly a technique practised by the lower jaw species? It would make sense considering the physical structure of their heads compared to that of the upper jaw species...

Anyone ever noticed their upper jaw species burying?

cheers,
e. "]

its camoflauge I ahd a del who used to bury himself completely in the substrate just it eyes poking out-Anne

My delhezi used to do it all the time when i first got him...then, my lapradei who had never done it before started as well. For my polys, they seemed to only do it when they were scared :nilly:

completely bury himself!?!? hehe... now that would be a sight...

so your upper jaws did it aswell... there go's my idea!

I wish i had a video camera when i was watching yesterday...One of my endlis buried his head in the black substrate and waited for a feeder to stroll past and launched himself like in the predator movie and it looked sikkkk!!
Beastly endli, calculated ambush, cloud of black sand, jaws gaping...BAM! :headbang2

i love these fish!

Oddly he quit doing this when I added 2 P.p.pollis to the tank safety in numbers in this case would be my assumption-Anne

Yakuza:he blended in well with the substrate in fact I tore the tank apart looking for his happy self I at first thought he had escaped lol

Eminas: You would be correct it is an ambush technique and endis and delhezis are the only ones I have seen or heard of using this technique
hiding in plants seems to be a favored technique of other species-Anne

yes i have noticed my baby 5' longfin albino sen hiding in the leaves up on top of my driftwood, right where the feeders seem to gather...never actually seen him nab one tho he/she does show alot of interest....:D
