My red devils recently started doing this head shaking thing.I know it can be breeding behavior. But nobodies paired. I was thinking terrortorial. Just seems weird there doing it and not trying to pair. 3 red devils ,180gal,temps @ 82,one 4in, one 5in,and one 8in.Dont know the sex.Im about to do a water change and will post the results later. Its usually spot on though. I know there living situation may have to change do to the aggressive nature of the type of fish. Any input would be great.

If 2 of them are near each other and follow each other around it could be mating behavior.

If they just shake at each other then it may be territorial aggression.

What are your water params anyway?

From my experience head shaking is usually a serious warning telling the other cichlid to go away asap. It is usually a serious threat, and that fish is pissed! Gill flaring seems to have to be a lesser threat and may have other meanings.
It is amazing how cichlids communicate and do it more often then we may even know.

Do all CA cichlids do that?

@ thaicoconut- yeah most CA's do that, but its mostly my male cichlids- grammodes, motaguense, or jewel cichlid indicating that they own that territory or that they are ready to breed.

ya i think its pissed.... my fish do that and there all ca/sa, even when i kept africans they did this. prolly even more acually

My fish do it when guarding fry and I get too close to the glass.

82* is too warm for them. Do a water change with slightly cooler water and that may stimulate spawning. then bring temp down to 78*
