another factor is that as the bichirs are bred in mass numbers, in the long run inbreeding/selective breeding/limited gene pool will all affect the looks of the fish, causing them to look different from (and in some cases worse than) WC ones.
Take CB endlis, since it's so popular and been bred/mixed so much, their head shape is generally quite different from WC ones, and sometimes weird looking. And if you look at platinum endli, the situation is even worse, there are way too many i've seen with abnormal head shape, no doubt due to the inbreeding to produce the platinum morph.
So what you notice may simply be a result of the mass breeding, in addition to different regions of fish being mixed.
