I was big into reef tanks for 6+ years and peaked with a 400 gallon dominated by some huge monti caps (one was 33"x20"x8").
I took it all down ing spring 2008.
I did my time with flatworms, but they were relatively harmless. The real pest was Myrionemia Sp. hydroids. These little buggers are the closest cousin to the Portuguese Man-o-War. 30 min of picking them out of the tank would result in my fingers stained orange/yellow, and uncontrollable shaking in my forearm. Needless to say, I started using latex gloves.
Anyway, about 2 months after taking the tanks down I realized that I wasn't having monster migraines anymore. I'd imagine it was toxins from the corals and hydroids.
After hearing the stories of Palytoxin and people in the hospital from handling some palythoa and zoanthid species, I'm happy to be rid of that stuff.
Anyone else get real migraine headaches from their reef tank?
