light and substrate is making them super white probably. Flowerhorns are typically light colored when you get them as fry. All the coloration starts as they continue to mature. They look normal to me.

Cool, I was just wondering because everyone else's flowerhorns from pet smart started showing colors early . thanks

Does the color of the substrate have a direct effect on the coloration of the fish or do you just think that the white is reflecting to much light and washing out the colors?

From a lot of collectors, typically natural colored gravel and blue backgrounds or even white walls are preferred for most of your flowerhorn strains. For faders or thai I prefer black substrate/darker backgrounds. So to answer your question, I guess there's belief that it does have an effect on the fish. I believe there was a thread somehwere about it.

His flowerhorns are definitely being washed out by light reflecting off the white rocks, but they are generally white looking when very young. Grow em out, they will color up.
