I didn't post this in the disease thread because I don't know what's going on. I might lose my beautiful monster, Brick. Fishkeeping can be so cruel.

Right now he is upside down in the 225 trying to turn himself over. I've propped him against a plant. Boss the bp like a true friend is staying near, either nudging or pressing against the oscar.

Okay...this is what I know and it isn't anything. During the month of January Brick started getting thicker. Didn't think anything of it at first but then his sides started bulging underneath. If you looked along the side and top he looked pretty parallel. But it got more noticeable as the month progressed. He acted completely normal but I monitored.

I suspected he might have been overeating since this coincided with when he got new food (pellets) which I alternated with the insects or made a mix. Usually I skip feeding once or twice a week.

I did a partial water change but later took him out of the tank because he was starting to lay at the bottom too much. I didn't have anything to put him in other than a 5 gallon bucket...I had to stand him on end. A quick epsom salt dip. I gently touched his sides. They felt like the rest of his body. Not soft nor hard.

Put him back in the tank and he went upside down. This is only the second time in his life he's been out of the tank. The weight and girth of this fish is astounding when you get him out of the water. I braced him between my forearms and he's heavy as a bag of rock.

He doesn't have hith or a prolapse. I'm numb right now. If anyone has an idea of what's going on I'll take any unput.

I'm so sorry to read this FINWIN FINWIN . It's hit a bit of a raw nerve with me due to the recent passing of my giant gourami.

I can't offer any sound advice on fixing him as I know nothing about fish maladies. All I can offer are kind words of support at this time.

I think I can speak for many of us when I say that both you and Brick will be in our thoughts.

I sincerely hope that he manages to get through this. Keep us posted.

Thank you for the kind words. Needless to say I'm not getting much sleep. Times like these it's good I work mostly at home.

Here's the update: I've transported Brick to an insulated styrofoam box I had in the garage. There's a standard 78 degree heater, small silk plant, and a large 6" air disk in there with him. I sprinkled a bit of epsom salt in. His head is over the air disk so there's plenty oxygenation over his gills. He's still on his back but breathing well. here and there he flaps. I palpitated his sides for a few minutes.

Near as I can tell he's gone into some kind of weird shock. He didn't roll over until I put him back into the 225. Makes no sense. Some times he nearly rolls over rightside up but then flips again.

The box has a lid. I keep it partially covered. I will be taking a picture of his anal area...looks like two white dots that are flat.

He made it through the night. Because of his size I'm making sure the water stays fresh. After massaging his sides again, the left side has gone down some but the right is about the same. So now it's treatment mode. Thankfully I have some Metro on tap and he's gotten his first dose. I also put a few drops of garlic juice in the water.

There are small encouraging signs
Brick hasn't lost color
He's sinking lower in the water (last night his belly touched the surface) now he's an inch under

I'm assuming nothing at this point but will hope for the best. A direct Metro feed is next. And as crazy as this sounds, I actually underestimated Brick's size...his body height is nearly eight inches not seven! Just insane.

That sucks - I’m really sorry to hear.
I hope he pulls through.

Just to rule anything out, no major changes to the tank recently? Any other fish acting off?

Just the new plants but they were treated with alum for days. All the other fish are fine. I did discover the possible reason he rolled over when I put him back in the 225: thermometer had a bad battery. I replaced it and found the 225 was 74 degrees and the bucket he was in at 78 degrees. So that won't be repeated.
