I have 2 260w coralife retrofit kits mounted in the hood of my 90gal. I was thinking about putting glass lids on there to cut down on evaporation... would that be a problem with the heat from the pc's.. will they break?

With PC's I would say it shouldn't be a problem. It would depend how long your leaving the lights on for and how close the lights are to the glass top. If you were to go for the normal 6-8 hours at atleast 5 off the glass you should be fine.

I used to have metal halides about a foot off the top and put a glass top on to keep a jumper from trying to jump again and the tops cracked in less than an hour.

Add a computer fan to the hood and run it with a plug in transformer. They use very little energy. Look for one of the older fans (bigger) on eBay. Then match a transformer to it. Mine fan is 12v .2A and the transformer is 12v 300mA (.3A). It is ok to go higher with the transformer but not lower. The reason is because the load is determined by the fan, not the transformer.

You must have adequate air flow between the light fixture and glass top to disipate the heat... my 210g FOWLR tank has 2 36" power compacts at 130 what per fixture (2 -65w bulbs each fixture) and i had to raise them about an inch above the glass tops because the tops would be extreemly warm after 8 hours of lights..never cracked but i wasnt comfortable with it so i raised them and it made a big big diffrence on the glass temp but did not noticeably effect the lighting in the tank nor the tank temp

Just to clarify, the power draw is determined by the fan rather than the transformer.
