While cleaning and replanting my pickerel tank last night I bumped up the temp for the plants, but this was an older heater and has no set temperature marks you just king of got to guess I wanted it at about 74-75. I walk upstairs to find my pickerels belly up and the temp was at 86. I fell so bad as this was completly my fault I will def. replace that heater with a new one or go without a heater for my next pickerels. :(

Go with out, they don't need a heater.

Get plants that don't need warm water too.

The plants didnt need warm water I just wanted to speed up there growth for a few days. I know pickerel dont need a heater, but I also thought it wouldnt hurt and that it would increase its motabalism. But I found out the hard way to much heat is a bad thing.

Sorry to hear that man :( Thats why I told that other guy on the forum to not even put a heater in the tank.

which I must add is good advice, and I can say that from experience now

Yeah, they are more sensitive to little diseases when the temp is warm. Especially if something touches them (ie net) and rubs away the slime coat.

I dont see how this plays into effect as the temp was just turned up last night :screwy:

Yea, its not a disease problem, its just the fact that the temp jumped so quickly not to mention 86 degrees is pretty hot! Also when when the water is that warm the oxygen levels drop drastically, which was most likely the cause of death.

yes :(

I catch red fin pickerels in water above 86 degrees all the time in the wild. More likely the tank wasn't aerated enough and the oxygen concentration went down due to the temp. I don't like to keep any fish that warm but I see no reason the temp could have killed the fish with out other causes coming into play.
