Ive had a 55g with 2 oscars 8-10in, a lepriconis i think its called bout 8 inch yellow black stripes, parrot fish 3in round, chinesee algea eater and a spotted cat 3-4in. I have never used a heater before but have seen post on putting heaters in sumps and what not. But those are usually 100G plus tanks it seems. Should i be using one? The fish are fine have had them for a while no problems. I read in here about the bacteria growth and the heat being good.

assuming your house stays around 74 or so then the tank should as well maybe even a little warmer with all of the filtration etc. as long as the tank holds a consistent temp then you do not need a heater.

heat does help in fighting disease by raising it and adding salt but most people use heaters and they only need to kick on every once in a while if it is held at 74-76. hope that helps. no heater is ok IF the tank stays about 74 and up.

yeah that helps i didnt figure i needed one but seen others with and was curious. Anyways new to forum and tons of info on here. Lookin to make/buy a tank for the basement when we finish it. Want a 100plus gallon. Heres what i have so far.

eventually you'll need a bigger tank for all those fish, but as for the heaters, as long as you keep the temperature in the mid 70's and stable there shouldn't be a problem with the heater situation, which is the least of your worries with that kind of bioload.
That being said, not trying to sound overly critical, the fish look ok!

yeah an upgrade will be needed BUT you already are planning that ;) the tanks look good and welcome to the site.

so i really have to many fish in the tank you think?? The turtles are 1 red ear slider, 1 painted turtle 1 of i dont know?? Cant figure it out yet.

Your tank is VERY VERY overstocked for a 55 gallon. I would personally put a heater in your tank just to make sure the temperature stays stable. No need to stress out your fish more than they already are. I would upgrade as soon as you possibly can.

never would of though that would be to much for that tank still seems to be plenty of room. How many gallon would i need, or how many should i have in there?
