I am new at the shipping game, but one package went well, the other package not so hot. I was shipping priority but it was just going across michigan, but knowing its USPS, i didn't know what they would do with the package since i have gotten priority shipment in 6 day. So to be safe i threw two heat packs in, the box was a little over a cubic foot, well the guy received the package and the heat packs cooked them,:irked: they were 72 hour heat packs. So should i just have added one heat pack or not? the temp are around 50F high and lower 30s for the low.

I'm fairly new to shipping too but I would have used one heat pack.Maybe someone with more experience will chim in.

oh my- yes you should have only used 1 at most shipping that close and always protect the fish from the heat pack with some newspaper or a paper plate etc.Even a thick piece of construction paper is okay. Was the heat pack taped to the top of the box? You always want to do that also.Worse case scenerio-wrap it in newspaper so its not right on the bag. A 75 hour heat pack(let a long 2) is also a bit too big for short distance and that small of a box.If I am not mistaken, somewhere on here is a shipping thread with a step by step.Sorry to hear that bad news.Just use it as a learning curve.
Also, the hotter the box-the less oxygen is present.

The 72 hour heat packs have more mass and burn alot hotter than the 40 hour packs. It would be risky using 1 in a small well insulated box. This is not the first time Ive read of fish getting cooked by a 72 hour heat pack.I know people use them so it just takes some experience in designing the package so the fish dont get cooked.I always use the 40 hour heatpacks in the small boxes, the 72 hour packs in the big boxes if its really cold.

yes they were taped to the top, and i wrapped the fish with newspaper and covered the top of them with newspaper, all i have is 72 hour heat packs, should i get 48 hour and 24 hour heat packs for short distance, like priority across the state? I always thought i would just be safe and throw them in, like the phrase "better safe then sorry", but i guess i was wrong.:irked:
