Hi All,

I have just set up a 55 gallon which will probably be a JD species tank. The problem I'm having is heat. The tank is at 82-83 without any heater or lights on. Room temp has been 75-77 degrees.

For filtration I have a Eheim 2126, Eheim 2213, and two maxijets pumping my ugj. Did I maybe pack the filters to much causing the pumps to work too hard? They are whisper quiet and no strang or grating noises come from them.

Is there anything I can short of using a chiller. Oh and I unplugged the heater from the eheim 2126 to make sure that maybe it wasn't stuck on or calibrated correctly.

i dont think so.its just summer my tank is over 86 and that all it can read.[suky sticky themometer].

you can use frozen water in a bottle or gallon for a bit in the tank to kool down

also you can open your canopy or hood

maybe put a fan blowing across the top of the water?

Howdy,

If your lights are out and all heaters are unplugged, the tank is not exposed to sunlight and the room temp is stable, the only culprits possible are the maxijets. Eheims run amazingly cool, even when packed. Try to turn the maxijets off for a day and see if it helps. Having the two Eheims, I do not think you need any extra filtration or water movement anyways. Heck, the 2126 alone would be enough for your tank

I agree with harleyk. it must be the maxijets. maybe you can use rain bars or fan blowers. Water temp don't usually go over the room temp, unless you are using a heater or strong lights.

hi Harly

Yeh I think I went a little overboard with filtration, but I figured I'd have messy fish and wanted to keep the water clean. Also I figured I could use the smaller eheim to use carbon or resins if the need arose without messing up the main bioliogical filtration going on in the main filter

Good thinking. What I wanted to emphasize is that you will most likely not run into any problems when/if you disconnect the maxijets for good.

Good luck,

Why don't you leave one Eheim and one MJ on the tank, and then get another tank for the remaining pump & filter ... that means you should probably sort out your heat problems and you'll have another tank :D

Just remember room temp is room temp. the water won't get over that without a significant heat source.

The maxi-jets are just that. I saw somewhere, but can't seem to locate it off-hand, a post that gave a way to calculate the heat produced by maxi-jets, and how they affect different size tanks.

good luck
