I recently had a 50 watt infared light on my rtb cage.I upgraded to 75 watt.Should this be just right for a 55 gallons depth,so the heat reaches the snake.

Get a thermometer(s)...they will tell you if thats the right bulb.

exactly... an infra red point and shoot gun are great, or a probe thermometer would be useful. You could move them around and find temps at different places.

Its a lot more than just licking your finger and putting it under the bulb ;)

You can buy temp guns at http://proexotics.com (minis on sale for $15!) or at Radio Shack or Home Depot, etc. They are a must no matter how many herps you have.

As others said, you need a good thermometer. Stay away from the cheapo pet store thermometers too. Get a decent accu-rite or other digital thermometer, they sell them at any target, walmart, lowes, HD, etc.

The temp that your bulb gets the cage will be relative to what the room temperature is. For examle, a 75w bulb in a 70 degree room may only heat the hot spot to 85, whereas that same 75w bulb in an 80 degree room may heat the hot spot to 95.

Follow me?

it is digital. The thing is i have the digital thermometer near the top of the tank(i kno its stupid)and i dident realize that the snake would be near the bottom. The temp at the top reads 86 degrees. The digital thermometer has permenent sticky velcro so i dont even wanna take the chance of screwing it up.
