Heater burn or fungus?

So a few days ago I noticed one of my fish appears to have either heater burn, or possibly some kind of fungus.

Does anybody know for sure what this would be, and how to fix it?

Not fungus. Do you have closer shots? Does your heater have a heater guard included? For injuries, all you need to do is maintain clean water quality.

The heater does not have a heater guard, but I am thinking of getting an inline heater for the canister filter.

Ive had a pickerel in the past that had fungus when i first got him and that was more white and looked like cotton. He also had a heater burn later in his life which looks like what you got.

Do you think melafix and clean water would make the heater burn go away?

yes, just use that and keep up with frequent water changes.. I did two water changes a week for a ryukin goldfish with massive side wound and it took about a month to heal. Just clean water should do the trick
