heater died again

OK, so this is the second time I have had a heater die this year.

I thought a single 300Watt heater would be fine for a 180g tank. The room where the tank is never gets very cold. Maybe 70 degrees when the AC is running. I keep the tank set to 78.

Should I get 2 200Watt heaters?

If it's the second one that has died I think that should be a sign, 300w isn't enough and 2x 200w wouldn't be much better in my opinion.

I would do at the minimum 2x 300w with a heater controller so you know they are working together.

If you look at ratings a 300w heater is only good for 65-100ish gallons depending which company is rating it, not nearly enough for a 180g.

I have a backup heater on every tank I own and plugged into different sources as well...
 
Just out of curiosity, are these heaters positioned close to the water line? If so how much evap are you seeing? Some heaters will break if they're exposed to open air while running.
 
What brand are these? 2 smaller heaters are always best just in case one breaks.

it was at the bottom of the tank

I would see 2-3 gallons a day worth of evaporation

If you hook these heaters up to a Ranco controller from JEHMCO, they will last you many years.
