Wow! I have just now discovered that a heater exploded in my sump, it happened no more than 24 hours ago, as that is when I last checked that area of the sump. I have a blue spotted stingray and a banded cat shark in the tank, and they are showing no signs of any issues as of now, but I have been reading that some glass heaters have copper inside of them, and at this point I am not sure what to do. If there was copper in mine, would it have shown effects by now? I run carbon in the tank 24/7 so that helps, but I am still not sure what to do. The heater is two weeks old, and I have another of the exact same model that is working fine. Here is the heater in question. http://www.marinedepot.com/Hydor_TH...rium_Heaters-Hydor_USA-HD11102-FIHTGH-vi.html It is the 400W model, I could really use some help at this point.

Hydor heaters are made with shatter proof glass so i'm not to sure how it could explode they are one of the heaters that I trust. Tho I recently purchased a 300 watt hydor which is set on the lowest possible setting (in my 125 gal) and the temp in the tank won't go bellow 83 degrees so i'm guessing like all brands of heaters there are defects. If i were you id just clean all the glass out of the sump and do a 50% water change (cleaning the substrate) and you should be good. How old was the heater?

Maybe two weeks at most. And it is less than shatter proof, I will get a picture latter this afternoon, thanks for the reply.:)

The up side is that it will take a lot of copper to have a negative impact on your stock. Much more than a heater will release. With carbon and your rock/substrate absorbing it, you shouldn't have anything to worry about.

Is your heater on? You might have a warm tank naturally and the heater isn't the cause.

That is great to hear, I really love the livestock. I am in the processes of a 25% water change so if there is anything at all, I should not have to worry about it. Thank you very much for the help.

sorry to hear about your heater exploding never heard of one exploding i have been using alot of fluvals with no issues they have a protective case around them. also how long have you had the blue dotted? i have heard from lots of ppl they are really hard to keep unless you can get them eating.
