i got this TOP FIN heater for one of my tanks not even a year ago, the other night it malfunctioned somehow and the water got REALLY REALLY hot, my $15 tsn was floating when i woke up, i unplugged the heater first of all, did a water change, noticed that someone else was missing, looked behind the tank and found my delhezi dried up on the floor...

Heaters go on the fritz..even top of the line ones. Best thing you can do is split your heater load. For instance if you needed a 300 watt heater to properly heat your tank, buy two 150's instead. That way if one of them locks up on you, it certainly wouldn't toast your fish.

I also use heater temp controllers too.

That's always frustrating. I went to the beach over the long weekend and we left our AC on for the cats and my heater in one of my Dat tanks failed. The tank was at 65 degrees when I came home. I lost two of my red-hump geos and potentially my leaf fish (I haven't seen him in two days) but so far all of my datnoids have made it.

I was kicking myself in the ass because I use the two heater method and one of them broke and I was going to replace it as soon as I got back...Murphy's Law I guess.

I just had a similar thing happen. Two heaters failed in two seperate tanks within a week. I lost a tank full of ABN and RBN and the other tank was full of Syno. Petri's. I've preached redundency for a long time, but for some reason didn't have redundant heat in these two tanks.
I wouldn't ever trust one heater in a tank ever again. Redundency is the only way.

Top Fin stuff sucks.
Dam right it does my 200 watt heater also sucked would set it to 78 degrees and it would end up at 82 to 84 degrees. I also had a algae problem at the time. Heater has been replaced with a neptune 200 watts submersible and works wonderfully.
