whats a good heater to get for my 55 gallon freshwater tank? and what temp should I leave it at? at the moment I just have clown loaches, tetras, bala sharks, and gouramis and royal pleco.. gonna get rid of all later though except loaches and royal and get a datnoid.

Where you live you don`t need much in the way of a heater.
Unless you keep your air conditioner in the lower 60 range, 1-3 watts per gallon would do just fine.
Keep in mind, fish tolerate a bit of colder water considerably better than overly hot.
Can`t recommend a brand of heater, since I hardly ever have one in my tank.
I have a really cheap-o 50 watt that has no adjustment on it that I put in when we get a cold snap.
Our cold weather drops the in house temperature to the mid 60 range(too cheap to turn on the heater).
The cheap-o heater has never let the tank drop below 75 and I never worry about the water getting too hot.

datnoids are brackish water fish.5 watts per gallon is the rule of thumb for heaters. So between 250 and 300 watts for you. Another great idea is to divide the total by 2 and purchase 2 heaters this will use less enegy lengthen the life span and effeciecy of your heaters and provide you with a back up if one should fail. it can be unsightly if you have to install them directly into your tank so a sump would be better. but the extra twenty to thirty dollars pays for it self in electric use and longer life span of heater let alone the insurance of a fail-safe against one burning out. i have used 1 heater for tanks 40 gallons and under without problems. The packaging will often tell you they can handle more. again for smaller tanks i haven't had a problem. I like fluvel, finnex and ebo jagers. all have been good produsts for me. The kind of fish, plants and behavior that either can display are effected by temperature. I heater is highly recommend on most levels of fish and aquatic fauna keeping and mandatory on some.

If you have a cannister I highly recommend they hydor eth.
