Heater Issue and Heater recommendation...?

This morning i got up and was working on my 50 gal. project tank i just bought. I happened to rub my hand against my 20 gal. with my overgrown channel cat in it. The thing felt like bath water. I stuck my finger in the water and it was hot. The hearer coils were glowing red, so I turned it down and it went off.

Well, i set it on a lower setting and went downstairs to get some lunch. I just came back about 5 minutes ago and it was glowing again so i unplugged it and took it out.

Its an old glass "elite" heater. Is this common? I have a heater to use in its place for the next week or two until I move him into the 50 gal. What is a good heater for a 50 gal.?

I've seen lots of heater issue threads....... most end with death so you at least got lucky there.

aint that the truth. I had just finished up some trim work on the other tank and I was about to leave for the day. Good thing i caught it, cause he would be dead if I hadnt.

Also, Ive seen these stealth heaters around but whats the best brand or the best bang for my buck for a 50 gal.?
