I have a 300 gallon acrylic tank with two overflows. I will be making a Durso stand pipe for each overflow exactly as seen in this link. As a matter of fact the overflows shown are also exact copies of mine.

My question is, does anybody see a problem with putting a heater inside each of these overflow compartments, not in the standpipe but the compartment ?

The reason I ask is that my sump will be located in the next room and I'm not sure if the standard 6' sensor cord will be long enough to reach back to the tank should I put the heaters in my sump. I'm also thinking a little warmer water would be good for the bacteria as it flows over the bio media.

Just looking for feedback good or bad.

Thanks in advance.

i would go with your sump.

from what i can understand you have 2 heaters running then, i would put one in the sump and one near the return for the water that would really keep the tank at a steady temp

You both seem to recommend not putting them in the overflow compartments but please explain why not to put them there. Your not answering the original question.

Thanks again in advance.

I think you would be fine with them in the overflow, nice place to hide them. I do believe heaters are not as efficient when placed in flowing water. They may have to run more and I am not sure how much heat loss you would have by the time the water gets to the tank. Your best bet would be some experimenting.

to be safe Id put the heater/s in the Sump. Thats where mines are

Most people I know that have a sump put it there.

I would put them in the sump if I were you. You won't see them and the ]V[onsters won't hit them.

Thanks Bderick67, you are the only one to answer my question.

Heat transfer is heat transfer and no matter where you put them heat will be lost at the same rate in different parts of the system and sumps are high flow also.

Like you said, I'll experiment.

For all of the sump sheep, I prefer not to have them in my sump because like I said in the original post the sump will be in the next room. I don't think the standard 6 foot sensor cord will be long enough to reach back to the tank.

in my expeirence. i have my heater in my tank. tried the overflow and sump and the tempature was flucuating a lot.
