Woke up this morning to find that my fish tank water was the same temp. you would take a bath in. Ide say around 98 F. both fish were at the top of the water gasping for air and just barely holding on. I think I got there just in time actually. So, I immediately did a 50% water change and started dumping buckets of ice water in the tank. Had the fish remained top water I would not have done this in fear of sending the into shock. But they went back to the bottom and hid in their cave during this whole ordeal and the water was SO hot that I didnt worrie about it. I then filled the tank back up with cold water. So, I ended up getting my temp back down to about 86 F and the fish seem to have shook back. They ate and everything. Im really pissed at the malfunction of the heater because this was the tank that I had my not even two week old F1 Festae fry in that I paid $63 dollars for and you cannot find F1s anywhere around here. Much less a Festae period for that matter. So has this ever happend to anyone or know of a story of it happening? Im not trusting old heaters anymore.

I had a marineland Visi stay on like that to. It was only able to get the temp to 86F. It is a good idea to use a couple under sized rather then one that can heat the hole tank like the person above said.. I think I am done with the marinland heaters.....to many problems on this site alone. I know all brands will have issues but I am reading about to many from this brand.

I am very worried about losing whole tanks of fishes this way. You can look into a temperature controller that is another unit that will shut off the power if it exceeds the temp set on the controller and not the thermometer. It comes with it's own temperature sensor.

I have 2 of these on 2 of my prized tanks.

I have an OTTO one. Doesn't look like the one in the link, but you get the idea.
